The kitchen had the square footage but felt heavy and cut up, with raised-panel cabinets, soffits, and finishes that did not connect. We designed custom cabinets that run to the ceiling, which took out the soffits and opened up the room. Large quartzite slabs wrap the walls instead of tile, so the surface runs unbroken through the corners and the window. Glass-front cabinets around the sink window break up what would otherwise be a solid wall of wood.
